As the Graycliff story continues to unfold, we welcome you to join us on the journey.

Graycliff stands majestically on the shore of Lake Erie as a monument to one of the greatest American tales ever told. It’s a story about a wealthy businessman’s ambition of building a breezy summer retreat for his family, a woman’s steadfast influence in an otherwise male-dominated society, an acclaimed architect on the downward slope of his career, and a country on the brink of a financial crisis that threatened to extinguish it all.

VISIT GRAYCLIFF

Graycliff Estate
Tours Available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Graycliff Conservancy offers several different tours, from “just the basics” to a variety of very special tours. All tours are by reservation and are led by a trained docent.

See your tour options below.

BASIC TOUR

The most fundamental tour of Graycliff, this tour lasts 75 minutes and is led by a trained docent. It includes building exteriors and the grounds, both floors of the Isabelle R. Martin House, and Graycliff history.

TWO-HOUR IN-DEPTH TOUR

For those who seek a more thorough understanding of Graycliff and Wright’s architecture, the In-Depth Tour explores additional areas of the estate not seen on Basic Tours, including the complete Isabelle R. Martin House, the Foster House, and the landscape. Learn about the evolution of Wright’s plans for Graycliff during its design in the 1920s and Wright’s architecture during the development of his mid-career natural or organic style.

MASTER ARCHITECTURAL TOUR

This behind-the-scenes tour is led by Patrick J. Mahoney, an architect with vast knowledge of Wright's work. Mahoney will discuss Wright’s design of Graycliff, Wright's relationship to the Martin family, and the ultimate rescue of Graycliff.

Discover how Graycliff’s design compares and contrasts with those of other—earlier and later—Wright designs. This special tour includes several areas of Graycliff not covered on other tours, and is geared toward the serious architecture, design, and/or Wright buff.

It is only offered once a month on select Saturdays at 1:15 p.m.

SUMMER TWILIGHT TOUR

Scheduled for 6 p.m. on select Fridays throughout the summer, June 9, July 7, July 28, and August 11, the Summer Twilight Tour combines a tour of the houses and grounds with the opportunity to relax over a wine and cheese reception on the esplanade following the tour.

During the reception, guests will be treated to a special revival production of the original play “Renewing Wright,” a 20-minute exploration of the correspondence between Martin and Wright that both tested their relationship and built Graycliff.

GRAYCLIFF AND DARWIN D. MARTIN HOUSE COMBINATION TOUR

Darwin and Isabelle Martin had two homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright: the magnificent city home, the Darwin D. Martin House in Buffalo (1903-05), and the gracious Graycliff Estate, their summer home on Lake Erie in nearby Derby (1926-31). Both are open for tours, although they operate independently. You can save on your admission at both sites when you purchase a combination ticket to the Darwin D. Martin House complex and to the Graycliff Estate. The tours may be taken on different days.
